Is it alot of work to
use cloth diapers?
Not much more work.
Of course there is the time and effort required to wash diapers but
it's not much more work than washing an ordinary load of laundry.
Certainly cloth diapers aren't as convenient and quick as disposables
but considering the cost savings and the positive impact on the environment,
the effort involved is certainly worth it.
Won't my baby get alot
of diaper rashes?
Not normally. More
and more we are seeing babies who actually react to the chemicals and
materials used in the manufacture of disposable diapers. From
my personal experience, my children suffered fewer diaper rashes in
cloth diapers than they had while wearing disposable diapers.
However, cloth diapers not rinsed properly may have a slight amount
of soap residue which could irritate baby's bottom.
Don't cloth diapers cost
alot of money?
Because the initial outlay
for cloth diapers seems like more, you might think cloth diapers cost
more to use. The reality is that over the time your baby is in
diapers, you could potentially spend upwards of $3,000.00 (Can$) to
diaper a baby in disposables. To use cloth diapers (RP Diapers),
you could potentially spend up to $900.00 (Can$). This estimate
includes to cost of diapers as well as an estimated cost for the additional
laundry expense. That's a difference of more than $2,000.00.
How many diapers do I
need?
Depending on how often
you plan to wash diapers, for newborn to 4 months approximately, you
may need from 2 to 3 dozen diapers (the more often you wash them, the
fewer you need). For 4 months to 1 year appoximately, you may
need from 1 1/2 to 2 dozen. For babies over 1 year, 1 1/2 dozen
should be sufficient. A good rule of thumb is to have enough on
hand for the number of days between washings plus a minimum of a half
day supply. If your baby uses 6 diapers per day and you plan to
wash every second day, you should at least 15 diapers.
Is it true that babies
diapered in cloth tend to toilet train earlier?
Yes, in general, babies
diapered in cloth may toilet train from 6 months to a year earlier than
children diapered in disposable diapers. However, every child
is different and you can't assume your child will follow the trend,
it doesn't always happen and babies will toilet train when they are
ready.
